Wound healing is affected by several factors. Preexisting diagnoses may significantly alter, delay, or inhibit normal wound healing. This is most commonly seen with chronic disorders, such as diabetes and renal failure, but also occurs secondary to aging and substance abuse. Less commonly, genetic or inflammatory disorders are the cause of delayed wound healing. In some cases, it is not the illness, but the treatment that can inhibit wound healing. This is seen in patients getting chemotherapy, radiation, steroids, methotrexate, and a host of other medications. Understanding these processes may help treat or avoid wound healing problems.

Background: The ultimate goal of wound healing following minor injury is to form a tissue regenerate that has functionality and visual appearance as close to the original skin as possible. The body's physiological response to any wound is traditionally characterised by three distinct steps: inflammation, proliferation and remodelling. Summary: New insights suggest that the three phases overlap (and even occur in parallel) in both time and space in the wound, necessitating a clinical approach that targets each stage simultaneously to ensure rapid repair and wound closure without further complications. Ingredients that exhibit activity across each of the three phases, such as dexpanthenol, are of value in the context of minor wound care and scar management. Key Messages: In addition to treatment and ingredient selection, it is also important to consider broader clinical best practices and self-care options that can be used to optimise the management of minor wounds. An individualised approach that can account for a patient's unique requirements and preferences is critical in achieving effective wound recovery.

Timely wound healing supports positive outcomes for both the patient and the clinician. The cause of a non-healing wound needs both identifying and addressing. A dry wound bed will result in a lengthy healing process, impacting both the patient and the clinician, physically and financially. It is imperative to correctly identify the cause of a non-healing wound and address the causative factors using evidence-based best practice. A non-healing wound may be attributed to various factors, such as inappropriate dressing, lack of hydration, medication or underlying medical disease. Identification of the cause will support the most appropriate management choice. In order to explain the issues of a dry wound, it is imperative that the clinician first has an understanding of the concept of moist wound healing.

The treatment of open wounds is a daily challenge in veterinary medicine. There are numerous different wound dressings available, but unfortunately only a few have been tested regarding their effectivity in dogs and cats. Due to this non-transparent situation on the market combined with a lack of veterinary studies, the choice of an appropriate wound dressing is frequently based on empirical experience rather than on funded knowledge. This article provides an overview of the general requirements to be met by modern wound dressings and the current knowledge of their effectiveness in dogs and cats.

Chronic wound management represents a major challenge in the healthcare sector owing to its delayed wound-healing process progression and huge financial burden. In this regard, wound dressings provide an appropriate platform for facilitating wound healing for several decades. However, adherent traditional wound dressings do not provide effective wound healing for highly exudating chronic wounds and need the development of newer and innovative wound dressings to facilitate accelerated wound healing. In addition, these dressings need frequent changing, resulting in more pain and discomfort. In order to overcome these issues, a wide range of affordable and innovative modern wound dressings have been developed and explored recently to accelerate and improve the wound healing process. However, a comprehensive understanding of various in vitro and in vivo characterization methods being utilized for the evaluation of different modern wound dressings is lacking. In this context, an overview of modern dressings and their complete in vitro and in vivo characterization methods for wound healing assessment is provided in this review. Herein, various emerging modern wound dressings with advantages and challenges have also been reviewed. Furthermore, different in vitro wound healing assays and in vivo wound models being utilized for the evaluation of wound healing progression and wound healing rate using wound dressings are discussed in detail. Finally, a summary of modern wound dressings with challenges and the future outlook is highlighted.

The wound healing activity of one herbal formulation (Zakhme heal ointment) containing Rai,Suhaga,Fitkari,Swarnageru,Singdaraj in paraffin base was evaluated for its wound healing potential in two types of wound models in rats (i) excision wound model and (ii) incision wound model. The formulations responded significantly in both the wound models tested. The results were also comparable to that of the standard drug nitrofurazone used as a standard drug for comparison in this present investigation. The results were also comparable in terms of wound contracting ability,epithelial-ization period, tensile strength and regeneration of tissues at the wound area. Thus, this investigation confirms the use of the Zakhme heal ointment as wound-healing formulation.

Catecholamines play an important regulatory role in cutaneous wound healing. The exactrole of dopamine in human epidermis has yet to be fully elucidated.Current published evidencedescribes its differential effects on two separate families of G protein coupled receptors:D1-like andD2-like dopamine receptors.Dopamine may enhance angiogenesis and wound healing through itsaction on dopamine D1 receptors, while impairing wound healing when activating D2 receptors. This review summarizes the evidence for the role of dopamine in wound healing and describespotential mechanisms behind its action on D1 versus D2-like receptors in the skin.

The developments of nanoparticle-based treatments that benefit from novel discoveries have an essential place in the regeneration of acute and chronic wounds. Furthermore, research about the treatment methods which attempt to swiftly and scarless wound recovery has increased over time. In recent years, it has been shown that metallic-based nanoparticles, especially silver and gold derived, have an accelerating effect on chronic and contaminated wound healing. The crucial factors of inducing and completion of regeneration of wound are enhanced epithelialization rate and neovascularization in the tissue. In our study, the main purpose is the investigation of the boosting effects of erbium borate nanoparticles on the wound healing process, especially scarless ones. Newly syntesized erbium borate nanoparticles (ErB-Nps) were characterized by their concentration and particle size using nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA). In order to examine the effect of ErB-Np on wound closure, scratch assay for dermal epithelial cells and tube formation assay for endothelial cells were performed. In addition, in order to examine the effect of the ErB-Np at a molecular level, the levels of genes related to both wound healing, inflammation, and scarless wound closure were determined with the RT-PCR experiment. Consequently, it has been shown that erbium borate nanoparticles have increased the melioration speed of scar tissue and have given clues about scarless healing potential. The investigation of the regeneration potential of erbium borate nanoparticles was done via MTS assay, quantitative PCR analysis, reactive oxygen species assay, and scratch assay. Our results show that ErB-Np is a proper agent that can be used for scarless wound healing.

The art of healing wounds is quite complex. It requires the patient's local condition in conjunction with their systemic condition to provide the most ideal wound environment. As wound care is expanding with advances in technology, we are facing a variety of different wound care products based on an assortment of bioengineered skin substances, growth factors, oxygen therapies, low frequency ultrasound and even low energy light. While these emerging evidence-based treatments prove to be promising in improving clinical outcomes and quality of life, it challenges providers to provide cost-effective treatment plans. The goal of this paper is to introduce a discussion regarding practical clinical application of various forms of advanced wound technologies in order to optimize the art of wound healing.

Normal wound healing progresses through a series of interdependent physiological events: inflammation, angiogenesis, re-epithelialization, granulation tissue formation and extracellular matrix remodeling. Alterations in this process as well as the bacterial type and load on a wound may alter the wound healing rate. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of topical Saccharomyces boulardii on the healing of acute cutaneous wounds, using a prospective, controlled, experimental study, with six purpose bred landrace pigs. All wounds healed without apparent complications. Comparison of the mean 3D and 2D wound surface area measurements showed no significant difference between treatment groups as wounds decreased similarly in size over the duration of the study. A significant reduction in wound surface area was identified sooner using 3D assessments (by day 9) compared to 2D assessments (by day 12) (P < 0.001). There was no significant effect of treatment group on the number of multiple isolates or the most common isolates obtained relative to control wounds. There was no histologically appreciable difference between the wounds of the different groups. Topical application of Saccharomyces boulardii does not hasten wound healing or change the wounds' microbiome under the conditions reported in this study.
